When did you decided that the JEE was something you want to go for?
When I was in the 10th standard a cousin of mine had then started preparing for JEE and that’s how I got to know about it.
How did you prepare for the exams?
Following the general trend I went for coaching for all the three subjects.I did not join an integrated coaching center, but rather took separate coaching for all the three subjects from private tutors.
What was your motivation was it just brand IIT or something else?
I am a kind of person who keeps finding reasons for doing a job at hand. But, at first, it was the assurance of
getting a good(highpaying) job.Gradually, I realized what an honor it would be to study at such a prestigious institute of the country and receive the best possible standard of education.
What according to you are the best ingredient to crack the JEE?
Focus, focus and more focus. Clear understanding of all the concepts is very much essential to crack it.
Timely revision and practice is a must.
And what of these do you think you lacked/ possessed?
Towards the end of the first year, I lost some bit of focus. Also, I lacked practice and timely revision.
Was it all books, tutorials and formulas or you took out time for recre- ation?
I did take some time out for recreation. I used to go for joggings in the evenings. I also watched movies!
Things you would like to change wrt your preparation strategy
If I were to prepare for the whole thing again, I would like to revise my lectures regularly
and get my doubts cleared at the earliest. Also, I would not indulge myself in anything
suspicious of luring me away from studies.
Any specific problem you faced during your preparation and what helped you in your moments of such depressions?
I faced immense trouble (psychological and mental) during the second year of my preparation. And I am not just talking about finding it hard to study!! In fact, I had developed a good affinity for Math and Physics. The problem was a relationship problem on which I would not like to further comment. In such moments of depressions, I tried to pray to God. I also tried to snub all the feelings associated with that problem by constantly reminding myself that my future would be screwed if I continued to harbor such emotions, thoughts, etc… It was really tough and the cause of me losing focus. I feel lucky I was able to survive!
What was your expectation with yourself?
I expected myself to score in the first 500 if I studied religiously. However,as mentioned above, I wasn’t able to do that because of the mental trobles I was going through. So, it led to various aberrations with respect to time-management, focus and mental health. In addition, I got nervous on the day of the exam and made some pretty blunders (on questions which I later realized I knew).
If you wouldn’t have cracked JEE, how would you have felt and would you have considered dropping a year to ace the exam?
I still don’t know. Maybe really depressed…. Thank God, it didn’t happen! In all likelihood, I wouldn’t have gone for a year-drop.
Any advice you would like to prescribe for the aspirants wrt preparation?
Clearing JEE requires a crystal clear understanding of the concepts. If you do not have access to material/good school teachers (it’s always the case), then you should go for special coaching from reputed teachers. If you find it initially tough to handle (it’s always the case if you are an av- erage student), please don’t give up. Try to understand every line which you read. It’s essential you take out about 3 hours every day on an aver- age for self-study. Keep your spirit high always and do take out time for some physical activity.
Any advice you would like to impart to the aspirants as an IITian about life in IIT?
It will be one of the best days of your life. I won’t say anything more, just focus on your studies!!!
